Read On… Upper eyelid surgery in persons of East Asian ancestry is different from that in other population groups because of anatomical differences. Lid folds are often absent or very small. Even when present the folds are often limited to the outer portion of the lid. |
|
Surgery on such eyelids is common in young people, perhaps because of a cultural bias in favor of conservative, nicely designed lid folds. Among East Asians a common feeling prevails that visible lid folds brighten the eyes and make a person more attractive. Asian lids with visible folds are referred to as “double eyes”, and the creation of such lid folds as double eyelid surgery. Modification of the canopy covering the inside corner of the eye often accompanies, making the eye opening appear longer and more almond shaped. These tiny “zigzag” cuts are called a medial epicanthoplasty. |
The surgery consists of removing small amounts of skin, a little muscle (usually), and appropriate fat from eyelids. The skin is then attached to the ligaments of the eye opening muscle, and oftentimes to the eyelid cartilage, creating a crease which is designed to remain permanent.
Sometimes the “suture technique” is elected, where a fold results from several sutures placed deep in the eyelid, without skin removal. |
What’s different at The Flowers Clinic?: As Asian patients age, their lid overhang tends to obscure their naturally occurring lid folds that were prominent in the past. These hidden but natural folds can often be restored merely by a well done lateral emphasis forehead (coronal) lift. Eyelid surgery is not essential in these people but the eyelids benefit is immensely. This way avoids the postoperative swelling of eyelid surgery.

Dr. Flower’s has been a leading teacher of East Asian eyelid surgery for twenty-five years and has been widely honored in many East Asian countries for his expertise. Simply stated, the technique he devised for beautiful fold creation is used in countries around the world. Asian lid surgery at The Flowers Clinic is different because we emphasize beautification of the East Asian eye, rather than Westernization – which is rarely the desire of those requesting this surgery. Beautification while still maintaining ethnic integrity is also of importance at our clinic. We do however recognize that ethnic integrity can remain intact while still moving in the direction of international standards of beauty.
