Lipolysis

Liposculpture, Lipoplasty, or Liposuction

This operation has many names, but accomplishes the same thing – removal of hard-to-lose fat on the legs, hips, arms, abdomen, neck and facial areas in pursuit of a more beautifully sculpted body contour.

Length of surgery : 1-4 Hours

What to expect : Hospitalization overnight after large volume fat removals. Bruising and swelling for 2 to 6 weeks. Expect to wear supportive garment the first few weeks after surgery. Also expect several tiny incisions which will go through a prominent red phase prior to flattening out and turning light.

Recovery Period : Return to work 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on volume of fat removed. General activities should be limited for a week.

What’s different at The Flowers Clinic? : We are more careful than most, and perhaps more artistic as well. We request that patients with moderate and larger volume fat removals to be observed and cared for overnight at a hospital.
Lipoplasty (Liposuction) is a technique popularized for the removal of fatty deposits that are hard or impossible to dispel by dieting and/or exercise. Even a perfectly proportioned upper body does not prevent upper and lower hips, abdomen or knees from accumulating excess fat reservoirs often referred to “love handles”, “saddle bags”, etc. The technique of liposuction or liposculpting in properly trained hands is one way to remove these fat deposits with tiny 1/8” incisions. The technique is reasonably safe, but it is not recommended treatment for generalized obesity.

Dieting & Exercise : First and foremost, dieting and exercise should be used as a method to remove unwanted fat. Most will come off this way. Unfortunately, these methods are not always successful treatment for elimination of some bothersome fat deposits. The hips, waist, abdomen, buttocks, knees and ankles can be very resistant to dieting.

The technique of lipolysis has been used since the late 70’s in thousands of cases with creditable results. Small 1/8'” incisions in as inconspicuous locations as possible allow the insertion of a special surgical cannula which “vacuums” the fat through suction. A few tiny sutures are used to close the skin and tight elastic type dressing is worn for a week. The result can produce a pleasing correction of the bulges and fat contour deformity with minimal scarring.

Result : Results are often apparent immediately, but take up to 2-4 months to be generally appreciated. This is due to swelling, which continues to diminish over the next two years. In general, the results are permanent, but, if excessive weight is regained, the operated area can increase in size. We would hope that any increase would be less than would have been the case had the person not undergone “Liposuction”. Rippling or waviness can also occur with excessive weight gain.

Massage post-operatively promotes good healing, and helps dispel any lumpiness.
